The nurse had returned with a different man. She shut her eyes again.Ī few moments later-or perhaps it had been hours-the curtain opened again. The information seemed significant, but she couldn’t place it within any meaningful context. She looked back at the empty chair the man had sat in. That’s when she noticed that she was in pain. She tried to push herself up to a sitting position but found herself hindered by a cast on her left wrist. The nurse either didn’t hear her or didn’t heed her. The young woman in the bed turned to the nurse, but she too was leaving. He smiled coldly and pushed the curtain aside. He stood up, holding out his palms in appeasement. Then she turned to the man at the bedside and said something to him in a sharper tone. She said something in a foreign language and smoothed out the thin blanket. A nurse? She leaned over the bed and smiled warmly. A woman in a white headscarf and white jacket stepped through. Then the curtain on her left swished open. “Madame Weel-cock,” he said for the fourth time. His face had the puffed, plastic curves of a baby doll. A man in what looked like a military uniform sat in a chair pulled up to the bed, leaning forward onto his thighs and watching her intently. She was lying in an uncomfortable bed flanked by two dirty curtains. She shut her eye.Ī shrill beeping sounded from somewhere. Her vision was crossed by a blurred figure in white. Her left eyelid wrenched open, and warm yellow light flooded into the crack.

He is less than a second away when the political and cultural turmoil of the Vietnam War era intrudes into the staid recesses of his school’s athletic department. Once a Runner is the story of Quenton Cassidy, a collegiate runner at fictional Southeastern University whose lifelong dream is to run a four minute mile. It ranked as the number one most sought after out of print book in the United States in 2007. Reading it became a rite of passage on many teams, and tattered copies were handed down like sacred texts from generation to generation. Originally self published in 1978 and sold at road races out of the trunk of the author’s car, the book eventually found its way into the hands of high school, college, and postgraduate athletes all over the country. It has become one of the most beloved sports novels ever written. Once a Runner captures the essence of what it means to be a competitive runner to devote your entire existence to a single minded pursuit of excellence. She’s a patient, creative teacher able to reach the most troubled kids. Hayden seems to believe she’s the only one who can help the kids, sometimes to the exclusion of their parents. Another child expressed suicidal ideation and one who never did attempted suicide. I cringed when Hayden allowed eight year old Boo to disrobe and remain naked in class more than once and wondered why she kept one boy’s suicide plan secret. Published almost 40 years ago, the events in SOMEBODY ELSE’S KIDS probably occurred a decade or more before that. Maybe I’m being too harsh in my review, rating SOMEBODY ELSE’S KIDS against today’s standards, but I had a hard time embracing Torey Hayden’s teachings as much as I did in ONE CHILD. Torey Hayden takes on these very different children hoping to help them learn and improve their lives. A boy who saw his stepmother murder his father and brother. A girl brain damaged by abuse who can’t learn to read. 6/7/2023 0 Comments Cathedral novel raymond carverÈ la prima volta che leggo qualcosa di questo autore, che avevo in lista. This is a work I wished I had read myself, rather than listened to here. In biblioteca ho trovato l’edizione 2010 della raccolta di racconti Cattedrale di Raymond Carver. While he does choose to alter his voice for some characters' dialogue (very slightly), and throw in an inflection when a character is raising their voice (again, slightly), overall, I feel he's only been able to accomplish sucking the emotion out of each of these pieces, leaving behind what sounds like to me a recitation of individual words wholly unconcerned with the word that came before it, or that comes after. Particularly, the insistent, unvaried rhythm he reads at paints Carver's stories as monotonous rather than restrained. Norman Dietz reads through the prose as if he's reading a dictionary. I simply found the choice for the performance of this work to be overwhelmingly distracting, rather than effective. I appreciate that with recordings of work, the performer has the license to perform the work in the way they see fit, presumably in a way that might help the listener understand the nuance of the writing. The fifth and final season of the American drama/ adventure television series Alias premiered September 29, 2005, on ABC and concluded May 22, 2006, and was released on DVD in region 1 on November 21, 2006. I started thinking about this difference in my own life. P.15 – The heroine talks about the difference between being bored and being restless. Thank you for loaning me The Doll People. I guess the most 'interesting' part (if you can call it that) was when a new set of dolls entered the house and the reader can see the difference between the older porcelain toys and the newer plastic ones. (We learn about Doll State or Permanent Doll State where they are frozen either temporarily or permanently.) The storyline is slow and rather predictable but suitable for beginner readers who are gaining confidence with chapter books. Like Toy Story, there are certain rules about letting the humans see them moving but they actually have an oath with consequences attached. We follow the adventures of Annabelle Doll who is preoccupied with the mystery of her aunt's disappearance 45 years ago. This is like Toy Story but dialed up to 11, ya'll. I didn't realize at the outset of reading it that it was actually the first in a series which follow the lives of the members of the Doll family. Martin (with pictures by Brian Selznick) was another one of those books recommended as a great book for the kids in your life who are trying to stretch their legs as early and eager readers. This post has taken me far longer to write than I'd like to admit and I think that's largely because I found this book pretty lukewarm. I continue to look for an out-of-copyright version of the LOEB side by side edition from the 1920s, but I've not been able to find one on or anywhere else. Note: We really need the best public domian side-by-side Lucretius we can find for teasing out the meaning. Thanks to Eoghan or I would not have found this! This provides the Latin and at least a starting point for translation, and then other translators (such as Smith) can be used to fill out the meaning. I've downloaded the PDF and I expect screen shots of this version will be helpful in the future. Unfortunately it has the old "f" for "s" font style, but the eye adjusts to that pretty quickly, and the arrangement of the text does a pretty good job lining up the respective Latin and translated English. Does anyone know anything about this version? I can't even be sure who the translator is, but the introduction says that the Creech version was "many years ago" and this one is supposed to be more literal. I have been looking for a long time for a side-by-side Latin-English translation of Lucretius, and searching today I see for the first time one that I have never seen before. 6/6/2023 0 Comments Hyperion by Dan SimmonsIn his introduction to "Orphans of the Helix", Simmons elaborates: The original Hyperion Cantos has been described as a novel published in two volumes, published separately at first for reasons of length. "Orphans" is currently the final work in the Cantos, both chronologically and internally. After the quartet was published came the short story " Orphans of the Helix". It then inspired his short story "Remembering Siri", which eventually became the nucleus around which Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion formed. The Hyperion universe originated when Simmons was an elementary school teacher, as an extended tale he told at intervals to his young students this is recorded in " The Death of the Centaur", and its introduction. " Remembering Siri" (1983, included almost verbatim in Hyperion). The series also includes three short stories: This final novel in the series finishes the story begun in Endymion, expanding on the themes in Endymion, as Raul and Aenea battle the Church and meet their respective destinies.
